If you scroll through your Facebook and RSS feeds right now, more than a few brands that you recognize will stand out. These brands have excelled in the marketing category, beaten out their competitors, and come out on top. Competition in social media marketing is heavier than ever before, and only those who stand out will make it.
If your social media marketing isn’t bringing in the ROI that you expected, the problem could be your approach. You won’t receive the benefits of social marketing if you don’t get yourself out there and make your brand noticeable. If you want to stand out, here are some things to try.
Make Value a Priority
Your posts must always provide value to at least a portion of your target audience if you want to see engagement. Start by giving back to your fans. Give them what they want, whether it’s entertainment, lending a helping hand, or showing compassion toward a relatable cause. This is what being social is all about.
Solving a specific problem is one of the best ways that you can add value in your posts. For example, if you’re a garage door repair company, you might relate a common problem, such as loud grinding when the door opens. Follow up with a specific solution, such as getting an informational post explaining the reason for the noise and offering a free repair estimate.
Show Genuine Care
This goes beyond saying “thanks” for the comments that your followers make. It ultimately involves following up by asking how the recipient is doing and pointing out something specific about that customer to show that you’ve been paying attention.
“Treat your friends and followers with kindness and gratitude and show them you care about who they are,” says writer, artist, and producer Britt Michaelian. “Do this consistently and you will not only stand out, but you will feel great.”
Michaelian is a great example of this in her own social efforts to boost her brand. When a Twitter user tagged her brand in a tweet, she stated, “Thanks! How are you? Always love your photos on FB/Instagram.” This is the perfect example of how to reach out with kindness in order to build your brand
Listen to Audience Suggestions
If you’re willing to listen, your followers will tell you what they want from you. They’ll make comments (or not) on your social posts, showing you what kinds of things they like and what they avoid.
If you’re struggling to get the information that you need out of everyday comments, you can also try sending personalized messages to a few of your followers every day to get a sampling of what they want to see. Sometimes, asking is all it takes.
Use Personality in Posts
When you meet a person with very little personality at a party, you’ll probably spend about ten seconds talking to him or her before moving on to someone more interesting. The odds of you remembering him or her in a positive light are extremely low – if you remember him or her at all.
It’s similar with social media. All of the brands posting across networks are competing for some attention, and only those with personality, backstory, and interest will be remembered.
Don’t be afraid to make a few casual posts or to dive into pop culture in order to reach consumers on a more relatable level. You can do this while maintaining professionalism, and consumers will remember and love you for it.
