As you age, it’s important to take care of your health and find people who can assist you in your day-to-day living needs.

Each year, roughly one-third of Americans over the age of 65 will fall, according to the National Council on Aging.

In addition to falls, elderly individuals are more likely to get sick, they may suffer from diabetes or heart conditions, they may be overweight and more.

Social media can help play a positive role in maintaining your health as you age.

How to Put Social Media in Play

Social media can help you stay informed.

The biggest benefit of social media on your health is it can help you stay informed and up to date on ways to stay healthy.

For example, the flu shot is recommended to everyone, but especially to infants and the elderly who are both more likely to get the flu and suffer more serious symptoms. By following your favorite healthcare websites, you’ll be reminded of when to get your flu shot.

You’ll also be alerted of any illnesses that are spreading across the country and be given necessary precautions you should take to minimize your chances of contracting the illness.

Don’t Neglect Your Health

There are many things in addition to social media that the elderly can do to stay healthy.

For starters, visit the doctor regularly.

Have your vision checked (for safe driving), your weight monitored and your overall health evaluated. By visiting the doctor frequently, you increase your chances of catching an illness or disease early on and will have a better chance at successfully treating it.

Visiting the doctor is important for people of all ages, but especially for senior citizens who are more at risk of health problems.

Other ways to stay healthy include:

  • Stay active – Both physically and socially, it’s important to keep your body moving and your mind focused. Get together with friends, start a book club, go for a daily walk, take the grandkids to the park and more. Humans are social beings, so stay in contact with friends both in real life and on social media. Social media can connect you to groups in your area so you can participate in fun social events.
  • Eat healthy and take vitamins – Eating healthy is vital to feeling your best. Choose fruits, veggies, lean meats and foods rich in vitamins and minerals. While it’s OK to treat yourself, try not to make a habit of eating unhealthy foods.   • Rest when needed – Sometimes, you’re going to need to take a break and rest. Social media can help your mind stay active by keeping you connected to family and friends without having to physically be in their presence. Perhaps you have family that lives out of state and have a hard time traveling. Social media allows you to be a part of their life without having to travel thousands of miles to see them. Resting is crucial to maintaining a healthy body, mind and immunity.

It’s only natural that as we age, we are going to need to take better care of our bodies.

By staying fit, eating healthy and maintaining a social life, the elderly are more likely to remain healthy and happy than those that choose not to take care of themselves.
