The level of innovation currently happening in this country is incredible. Startups seem to be popping up every day in every city. But are certain areas of the country more innovative and creative than others – especially when it comes to technology? While some would argue that creativity is spread pretty evenly across all demographics, the reality is that there are a handful of ‘hubs’ that stand above the rest.
1. San Jose, CA
You obviously can’t talk about tech hubs without referencing Silicon Valley. It should go without saying, but this lush area consisting of San Jose, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale is by far the most active tech hub in the U.S. Frankly, it’s not even close. When you look at the number of patents per 1,000 residents, the venture funding per capita, and the tech startup density in the area, no other city in the country comes close to matching what Silicon Valley has.
2. San Francisco, CA
Just north of San Jose there’s San Francisco. And while there’s a lot of overlap between Silicon Valley and San Francisco, these are two very distinct tech hubs. San Francisco is filled to the brim with wealthy investors, Fortune 500 companies, young professionals, and access to vast amounts of resources. It’s an entrepreneur’s dream, which is why the Bay Area is seeing such an influx of new residents and sky-high real estate prices.
3. New York City, NY
While the glitz and glam of New York City may attract tourists, it’s the nitty-gritty entrepreneurial activity that’s enticing startups and new ventures. New York City gives entrepreneurs access to just about any resource they could ever need, but you could make the argument that few are as valuable as the community support. The city has dozens of incubator programs and accelerators that are perfect for young companies in need of mentorship and guidance. That’s what truly sets New York City apart.
4. Austin, TX
At the beginning of this year, Forbes contributor Nav Athwal placed Austin, Texas on his list of five cities that are poised to become the next Silicon Valley technology hub. “Arguably the most attractive of these Tech hubs has been Austin,” he writes, “which has a young, educated population and a large VC presence, along with a burgeoning restaurant and music scene.” He also mentions affordability, real estate outlook, and access to funding as key reasons behind Austin’s growth.
5. Miami, FL
Don’t forget about Miami. While it may be renowned for its bikinis, beaches, and luxury high rises, Miami is also home to a growing startup scene. Athwal placed it on his list, mentioning the fact that many Latin American entrepreneurs are leveraging Miami for a foothold in the U.S. He likes to use the word “resurgence” when discussing Miami’s startup scene, stating that the city’s recovering economy will attract increased investor demand moving forward.
Flourishing Tech Hubs
You can launch a tech startup anywhere in the country, but if you want to position your startup for long-term success, it may be wise to consider one of the tech hubs mentioned in this article.
