How Can Social Media Be Useful For Students?

post thumbnail

Today, social media has become an important part of our society, especially for the kids and teens. Kids are using various social media platforms that parents are not cool enough to know about them. Furthermore, students are using social media sites during class time. Social media platforms may distract students from classroom activities. Keeping that in mind, most schools are following a different procedure by introducing social media into the educational system.

Social networking sites like Facebook, and Twitter are usually viewed as a way to pass the time or stay connected with family and friends. So how can all these platforms be used in the education?
Here are some uses of social networking sites for learning and teaching that most students and professors have been following:

1. Create a Facebook Group: Facebook is known as a platform to post status, pictures, and videos. All these things can be used in the educational system. Teachers can create a class Facebook group for sharing assignment writing, making announcements, and reminding students regarding important deadlines.

  • A Facebook group creates a space for the students to ask and answer questions. When students reached home and started working on their projects, they can post a question on the group’s wall that the classmates can answer.
  • It encourages shy students to take part in serious discussions. Students who don’t participate in the classes may feel they can share their opinions with social networking sites.
  • It keeps parents, teachers and students all on the same page. Parents can easily access the Facebook page to observe what is going on in a class.

However, it is the best way to build the students’ confidence and encourage them to participate in class.

2. Twitter Feed: Twitter can be a quick way to tweet announcements and reminders as well as real-time information on project deadlines. Twitter provides students a convenient platform to interact with others by tweeting questions or comments.

  • By following the Twitter account of experts, students can get more about what is happening in the world around them. They can use this knowledge in their research papers, writing, and other academic projects.

3. Post Videos to YouTube: YouTube can be an ideal option for the students to watch lectures and tutorials. As, students need a safe and secure platform where they can take part in the social aspect of video sharing.

  • Students can show their creativity as they connect more deeply with their subject and course material.
  • Students will enjoy watching new concepts, reviewing the books, and reporting on news stories.

4. Classroom Blogs: Each class should have their own blog, which is controlled by the teacher but authored by the pupils. So the student who develops the best assignment on the given topic of that week will have their paper published online to the classroom blog. It will encourage the other students to work harder to accomplish online publication.

A Final World on Social Networking Sites

Social media can be a useful tool for the students as well as teachers. Students who don’t participate in class can convey their views through all above-mentioned sites. If you are going to use social media platforms in your teaching or learning, don’t forget to read out their privacy policies.
