THE STORY –  Volkswagen CEO Resigns Amid Cheating Scandal

Volkswagen has been in trouble recently. With their emissions test cheating scandal being discovered earlier this week, all eyes have been on them. On Tuesday, CEO Martin Winterkorn resigned. (Source: USA Today)

What to say when your teacher calls you out…

Winterkorn said in a statement, “I am shocked by the events of the past few days. Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group.” He accepted responsibility for the scandal saying, “As CEO I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines and have therefore requested the Supervisory Board to agree on terminating my function as CEO of the Volkswagen Group. I am doing this in the interests of the company even though I am not aware of any wrong doing on my part.” (Source: USA Today)

A new CEO has not been appointed yet but is expected to be named on Friday. Amid the criminal investigation and 11 million rigged cars, the new Volkswagen CEO has their work cut out for them. (Source: USA Today)

Quote of the Day: “To all the new Instagrammers: Welcome!”

We all know that Instagram is popular. But did you know it’s like 400 million popular? In a blog post released yesterday, Instagram said more than 75% of Instagrammers live outside the United States and that more of the last 100 million members to join lived in Europe and Asia. Congrats Instagram! We love the food pictures and selfies that you bring to our smartphones.

In case you missed it…

If you have not been watching the news, Pope Francis is in America. This is his first time during his papacy that he has visited America so it’s a big deal. His five day, three city tour has been much anticipated and caused a lot of reactions online. Twitter decided to join in on the Popemania and have special emojis that appear next to the hashtags: #PopeinAmerica, #PopeinDC, #PopeinNYC and #PopeinPhilly. The emojis include a cartoon of the Pope’s face, Capitol dome, Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell. You know it’s important when Twitter makes personalized emojis. (Source: TIME)
